McDonald's phenomenal success has attracted a great deal of media attention in Taiwan, not all of it favorable. During the 1970s, radical writers and intellectuals had accused the government of exploiting the cheap labor market in Taiwan and conspiring with foreigners, especially Americans and Japanese, to oppress its own people. In the 1980s McDonald's was often equated with the "invasion" of American culture and values. By the 1990s, the growth of indigenous business giants appears to have overshadowed the new foreign companies and the public outlook has changed accordingly. The anti-American sentiments that affect McDonald's operations in Korea are less apparent in Taiwan of the mid-1990s. Nor is McDonald's an unambiguous symbol of cultural imperialism.
